Otitis generally diagnosed as ear infections either occurring in the tiny space behind the eardrum (otitis media) or in the ear canal (otitis externa).
Otitis Media:
There is a small space behind the ear that is normally filled with air and is connected to the back of the throat. In the time of cold or other viral or bacterial infection, this space filled with mucus which is then infected.
Symptom:
Common symptoms of otitis media include
Fever
Earache
Dulled hearing
Sometimes perforation of the eardrum
Otitis Externa:
Otitis externa is inflammation in the ear canal caused by allergy, infection and other causes. Generally, the infections are caused by bacteria and occasionally by fungal or yeast infection.
Causes:
Using cotton buds into the ear
Scratching and itching the ear can cause inflammation in the ear canal
The infection causes more itching and so on, worsening the condition.
Other causes include swimming, hot and humid weather, skin problems such as eczema and following ear wax clearing.

Sometimes, glands around the neck and ear can become enlarged and sore
